Upsilon Andromedae: A Rosetta Stone in Planetary Dynamics
نویسنده
چکیده
We review the orbital dynamics exhibited by the first extrasolar planetary system discovered, Upsilon Andromedae. This system is unique in combining all of the surprising architectural features displayed individually by extrasolar planetary systems found today: (1) a hot Jupiter, (2) two planets on highly eccentric orbits, and (3) a stellar companion. We discuss the system’s stability properties and its possible origin. Planet-disk interactions seem critical to the emerging story.

Habitability in the Upsilon Andromedae System
We investigate the habitability of the Upsilon Andromedae planetary system as it evolves from a hypothetical four-planet system into what is observed today. We initially considered a fourth planet at a distance of 4.76 AU from the central star. We simulated the dynamics of this system until the fourth planet was ejected due to gravitational interactions with the other planets. Results demonstra...
متن کاملApsidal Alignment in Upsilon Andromedae
One of the parameters fitted by Doppler radial velocity measurements of extrasolar planetary systems is ω, the argument of pericenter of a given planet’s orbit referenced to the plane of the sky. Curiously, the ω’s of the outer two planets orbiting Upsilon Andromedae are presently nearly identical: ∆ω ≡ ωD − ωC = 4. 8 ± 4. 8 (1σ). This observation is least surprising if planets C and D occupy o...
متن کاملA Distant Stellar Companion in the Υ Andromedae System
Upsilon Andromedae is an F8V star known to have an extrasolar system of at least 3 planets in orbit around it. Here we report the discovery of a low-mass stellar companion to this system. The companion shares common proper motion, lies at a projected separation of ∼750 AU, and has a spectral type of M4.5V. The effect of this star on the radial velocity of the brighter primary is negligible, but...
متن کاملOn the spacing of planetary systems.
We present a simplified model of planetary accretion based on conservation of mass, conservation of momentum, and angular-momentum-deficit stability. Within the limitations of this model, we show how the organization of generic planetary systems may be derived from the knowledge of their initial mass distribution. Comparisons with our Solar System and the upsilon-Andromedae planetary system are...
متن کاملThe Planetary System of Upsilon Andromedae
The bright F8 V solar-type star upsilon Andromedae has recently been reported to have a system of three planets of Jovian masses. In order to investigate the orbital stability and mutual gravitational interactions among these extrasolar planets, both forward and backward integrations from the latest observed orbital elements for all three planets' orbits have been performed under the coplanar a...
